Listen Up!

Ladies and gentleworms! On top of being a temporary summer home for the cold bug, I have managed to sprain my knee walking up and down the subway steps. It is official: I am in fact made of glass. I will say, though, that I’m getting pretty good at wrapping an ACE bandage for support. Go life experience skills!

Anywho…

Having spent the last several days confined to my grandmother’s apartment, and with only short walks down the block to ensure my legs don’t atrophy, I’ve had quite a deal of time to myself. I’ve been working on my TEFL (that’s Teaching English as a Foreign Language for those who don’t know) certification course. The only issue with that is every time I send in my latest worksheet, I have to wait for my tutor to grade it and send me the next. So that moves along at its own pace. In the down time, I’ve been alternating between reading the first book in the Wheel of Time series and playing my downloaded emulator pokemon games. I know, I know…I’m a badass.

Stop, you’re making me blush.

Pretty much the only other constants in my life right now have been my pills. Pop the cap for vitamins, and rip off the tabs for cold meds and allergy pills (damn cats). But this, dear dedicated and ever patient readership, brings me to the actual topic of my post: my favorite sound.

The sound of perforated edges being torn apart is beyond amazing. To give you an idea, I’ll put it this way: it sends happy wiggles down to the base of my spine and back up through my chakra channels until finally they explode forth from my pores and follicles creating tiny mountains of love all over my body.

You stop looking at me like that right this instant. What you call insanity, I call loveable eccentricity. Back off!

My absolute favorite sound is very specific. The rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrip of a movie theatre ticket is by far and away the best sound in the world to me. But seeing as I’m a broke, contagious cripple, I’ll not be seeing a movie in the theatres anytime soon. I shall have to settle for my one allergy pill and three or so cold pills a day. They still do the trick.

Something so small as this momentary noise brings me so much joy. Do any of you have that? Or am I alone? I mean, I have grown accustomed to being weird, but I would have to imagine that more people that just me have a sound that makes them smile for no reason. What is yours, dear reader?

Yes, I think that shall be my Monday Fun Day assignment. Employ your senses and listen mindfully for that one (or maybe you have a few) sound that sets your heart alight for a moment. I get goose bumps and do a little happy dance every time they tear my ticket at the movie theatre. How do you react to your sound? I’m curious.

This world is a loud one, my friends. You’ve got your work cut out for you. But I think you can handle it.

Unless you’re deaf…this will be much more difficult if you’re deaf.

Happy Monday Fun Day!!!

    1. Anonymity cannot hide you from me, my Husband. Love you! That is a wonderful sound, by the way.

  2. I couldn't agree more - the random sounds of the world are a whole symphony unto themselves. As a musician, and from a young age, sounds have always fascinated me, and I've become super-attuned to them. (I have also learned to block them out, lest I go absolutely nuts listening to ambient sounds that prevent me from getting anything done...)

I have so many favorites I hesitate to even begin listing them, but my all-time favorite has to be the row of blinking-clicking lights on the barriers at a sidewalk construction site - you know, those yellow lights that blink and click in a set rhythm individually, but when lined up and turned on at random different times their collective blink-clicks create an ongoing, always changing cacophony of sound delight?

C'mon, you know what I'm talking about, right????

Well, anyway, that's my favorite sound. I also have a memory of a certain vacuum tube in an old television being smashed with a sledgehammer that rendered a mighty THWWWWWWWOP that echoed throughout the parking lot.......

But I'm sure you have no recollection of that. :op

    1. How could I ever forget such a sound? It was one of those things that will stick in your memory bank forevermore. Though I remember it as more of a THWWWOOMP!
